Stir and Drop Sugar Cookies by Betty Crocker 


What you'll need: 
3/4 cup sugar
2/3 cup vegetable oil
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons vanilla
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
2 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
Additional sugar, if desired 
What to do: 

  1. Heat oven to 400ºF. In large bowl, mix 3/4 cup sugar, the oil, baking powder, vanilla, salt and eggs with spoon. Stir in flour. 
  2. Drop dough by teaspoonfuls about 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheet. Press bottom of glass onto dough to grease, then dip into additional sugar; press on balls until 1/4-inch thickness. Dip bottom of glass onto a wet paper towel, then dip into dry gelatin; press onto dough. Repeat until desired color appears. 
  3. Bake 8 to 10 minutes until light brown. Remove from cookie sheet to wire rack. Cool completely. 
Recipe Review: 
So Betty lied about time and temperature. We burned our first batch. Our second batch came out perfectly cooked at 350 degrees for 5 minutes. We ignored most of step 2. You can see the full instructions here. Just drop them on the pan, Betty, don't make this harder than it needs to be. We also put parchment paper over the pan to prevent sticking. These cookies have a mild flavor so we dusted our with lots of sugar before baking along with sprinkles and decorations. These cookies pair well with coffee and cappuccino.

Chocolate Chip Crisco Cake


What you'll need:
1 cup Crisco 
2 cup sugar2
1/4 cup plain flour
6 eggs1 tsp salt
1 tbsp vanilla
What to do:
Cream Crisco and sugar. Add eggs one at a time.  Add flour gradually, add flavoring. Place in cold oven and bake for 1 hour at 300 degrees.

Recipe Review:
For our rendition of this recipe we added chocolate chips. After everything was mixed, we folded the chocolate chips into the batter. We greased and floured our pans and baking dishes to ensure easy removal, and everything popped out perfectly! The cake is thick and heavy once baked. We made mini loaves and a giant gingerbread man. The cake is perfect for breakfast, a rich snack, and/or for fulfilling a sweet tooth. It is technically a pound cake, according to our recipe book. We then decorated our bread man. At first I was put off at the idea of a "Crisco" cake, images of lard loaves comes to mind, but this turned out way better than I expected. The loaves are perfect for giving away... not that we did, but I imagine they would make great gifts.
